Kobold Press announces original system in response to D&D license issues

Kobold Press Dungeons and Dragons

Tabletop creator Kobold Press announced they’re working on an original tabletop RPG system, a response to Wizards of the Coast announcing drastic changes to licensing.

Last week an allegedly new Open Game License (OGL) from Wizards of the Coast was leaked to news outlets.

The OGL allows companies to use rules and content provided in the OGL to create third party content. Despite this, WoTC reportedly said the OGL was never intended to “subsidize major competitors”.

The original OGL is used in RPG products ranging from video games to the intended third party tabletop market.

Kobold Press is one of these content creators who regularly releases unofficial rules based on genuine D&D rules.

Third party content in D&D has typically allowed for players to further customize their games using shared (but optional) rules and content.

The new OGL rules would seemingly limit what third party creators can make, and will also compel them to pay license fees to Wizards of the Coast depending on the revenue generated by their products.

A new tabletop system codenamed Project Black Flag, is Kobold Press’ new plan for a totally original ruleset and system.

While this is good news for fans of Kobold Press, at the time of writing we’ve yet to see any movement from the biggest Dungeons & Dragons competitor, Pathfinder.
