Ohayocon 2022 – An Attempt to Revitalize Gamers and Anime Enthusiasts

Ohayocon

Sorry Gamers and Anime enthusiasts alike, it took us a while to be able to cover the events of Ohayocon 2022. Although Ohayocon 2022 was small compared to previous years, guests’ energy levels were higher than we had seen in previous years. Voice Actors, special guests, con attendees, and even staff seemed in higher spirits. For Ohayocon 2022, the convention was held on the Hyatt side of the convention center. According to sources, this is because the convention center did not want to host the event. With ongoing covid precautions, it would be easy to understand that, however, the Columbus Convention Center was more than willing to host other events.

During our time at Ohayocon 2022, we spent a good amount of time jumping between panels, photoshoots, and interviews. While at the convention we had the opportunity to meet multiple voice acting talents. So far we have gotten to share at least one interview with you and there are more to come.

So What Did We Do?

Sadly, due to the ongoing pandemic, there were a limited number of panels and events to attend; even planned photoshoots were unmanaged with the organizer nowhere to be found. A few panels were canceled due to voice actors either leaving early due to the upcoming snowstorm or guests hosting the panels not showing up.

While at the convention, we attended photoshoots for Dragon Ball Z, League of Legends, Pokemon, and Disney. These photoshoots were chaotic with someone having to just take charge of the event when the organizer didn’t show up. During the Pokemon photoshoot, we helped another cosplayer organize the photos which you can see down below. Shockingly, the Dragon Ball Z photoshoot had only three people show up.

Additionally, throughout the weekend, the alarm kept going off. This typically happened during the middle of the day. Due to organizers expecting that the event would be smaller, most panels were held in small to medium size rooms. Unlike other years, the PC gaming area was held right next to the Hyatt bar.

Was it worth it?

Driving three hours to a convention can be a daunting task, especially with hazardous weather, but I can’t say I would do it differently. Everyone attending the convention was in good spirits. Located in downtown Columbus there were a lot of food options if you did not bring food or want to eat in the convention center; also some restaurants in the area offered deals to guests.

Despite a decreased number of guests and fewer panels, Ohayocon 2022 still managed to provide guests with fun things to do. Hopefully next year, Ohayocon will bring back some of the activities they canceled this year (dances and some panels).

With room for improvement, the staff who managed Ohayocon 2022 worked well with the limitations they had imposed on them. After improving since the online Ohayocon, 2022 is a great improvement. So if you are within the Columbus area or are willing to make the drive, it is definitely work heading out for Ohayocon and Mike’s Late Night Slice Pizza.
